LMU MUSIC DEPARTMENT PRESENTS ACCLAIMED CHORUS CANTUS
January 23, 2012 - Harrogate, Tennessee — The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Music Department will present the vocal ensemble Cantus live in concert on Tuesday, February 14, in the Sam and Sue Mars Performing Arts Center in the Duke Hall of Citizenship on the LMU main campus in Harrogate, Tenn.
Cantus, which Fanfare hails as the “premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States,” is committed to inspiring audiences with music performed at the highest level. The group, which is based in Minnesota, includes tenors Aaron Humble, Paul J. Rudoi, Gary Ruschma, Shahzore Shah and David Walton; Adam Reinwald and Matthew Tintes, both baritones; and basses Chris Foss and Timothy C. Takach. Cantus rehearses and performs without a conductor or music director and are renowned for adventurous programming, often spanning many periods and genres.
The group will present its “On the Shoulders of Giants” program. “On the Shoulders of Giants” features masterworks by composers and writers from Franz Schubert to Lennon and McCartney who have inspired the ensemble and continue to inspire each generation of new musicians.
Cantus is also dedicated to music education with a mission to spread a love of singing to people of all ages. Each year the ensemble works with over 5,000 student singers in workshops, master classes and school performances. They were recently awarded Chorus America’s 2011 Education Outreach Award for its innovative Cantus High School Residency Program.
The winner of the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from Chorus America, Cantus enjoys an active schedule of national tour dates, subscription concerts in its home of Minneapolis/St. Paul, educational outreach programs and recordings. The group’s LMU performance comes during a stretch of concert dates at colleges and universities including Clemson, LaFayette College (Pa.) and Ithaca College (N.Y.).
The Valentine’s Day concert at LMU will include classical and contemporary music.
