LMU CLEANING UP FOLLOWING JULY 5 STORMS
July 6, 2012 - Harrogate, Tennessee, July 6, 2012—The normally pristine and picturesque campus of Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) was littered with fallen trees, broken limbs and other debris from a strong thunderstorm that blew through the Harrogate, Tenn., campus on Thursday evening around 5 p.m.
“Our maintenance and grounds crews are working diligently to return our campus to its normal operating condition,” LMU President B. James Dawson said. “We were fortunate that the most extensive damage was sustained to our landscaping. And certainly, the best news is that there were no injuries.”
The storm damage included widespread downed trees. The line of thunder storms also caused damage to several University buildings. A window was blown out of the Schenck Center which houses classroom and office space for the School of Allied Health Sciences. Farr-Chinnock Hall and Grant-Lee Hall both sustained roof damage. Farr-Chinnock, which formerly housed science labs and classrooms and is currently under renovation to become the new home to the J. Frank White Academy, bore the brunt of the damage. LMU is working with insurance adjustors to determine the value of the damage. The outdoor batting cages near the Lamar Hennon Baseball Field were also mangled in the storm.
Grounds crews were on the job before 8 a.m. on Friday, accessing damage and blocking areas for safety purposes. The University technology infrastructure remained intact throughout the event with only a short outage of power and internet services. A film crew from the University’s Sigmon Communications Center was on campus during the storm and captured a lot of raw footage. That footage can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lURqMibIbVg&feature=youtu.be (credit: Sigmon Communications of the campus of Lincoln Memorial University).
