LMU LOOKS TO PAIR STUDENTS WITH SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS
September 24, 2012 - Harrogate, Tennessee — Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will host its first Service and Leadership Fair on Wednesday, October 10. The event is aimed at providing service organizations a forum to recruit LMU students for their causes.
As service is an integral part of the University’s mission, all students who receive institutional aid are required to perform at least 10 hours of community service hours per semester. The Student Service Initiative (SSI) is designed to get students to broaden their horizons and become involved in a service learning project in the community. It also encourages the students to enhance their resumes, network and give back.
“We’re excited to create what will become an annual event to connect our many energetic students with the region’s important service organizations,” said Associate Dean of Students Larry Thacker. “This fair will be a yearly opportunity for organizations to visit campus and meet potential volunteers face-to-face, an ideal way to both recruit for community service and learn more about the many needs of our region.”
Potentially 2,000 LMU students will participate in the SSI, accounting for nearly 20,000 hours of service that has historically directly impacted the community in a positive manner and helped students connect with the University’s mission to serve the needs of rural Appalachia. Student services and feedback has shown that they are looking for more opportunities to volunteer.
Historically, LMU students participated in a variety of opportunities across the region from the Knoxville area into southeast Kentucky and surrounding counties. Some of those projects included Relay for Life, Remote Area Medical, ROHO, Coaches vs. Cancer and more.
The fair will take place in the Student Center lobby from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizations interested in participating in the fair can register by emailing Thacker at email@example.com. LMU will provide a table, two chairs and two vouchers for lunch for participant organizations. For more information contact Thacker at 423.869.6204.
