HARBER NAMED VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
October 26, 2012 - Bobby Harber, of Rose Hill, Va., was recently given Lincoln Memorial University’s (LMU) Volunteer of the Year Award. LMU Vice President for University Advancement Cynthia Whitt presented Harber the award at a ceremony held during LMU’s annual Homecoming weekend.
The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented each year to recognize an individual who emphasizes generosity to their community in all their actions. The recipient is someone who gives of his or her resources, talents and time in order to truly contribute to the people they know and they place that they live.
Harber’s many volunteer commitments include Rose Hill Methodist Church, where he teaches an adult Sunday school class and acts as worship leader during Sunday services. He has been a member of the Lions Club since 1975 and served as president for the 2011-2012 term. He volunteers at a local food pantry, conducts Bible Bingo at nursing homes and senior citizen centers, mows lawns for the elderly, rings the bell for the Salvation Army during Christmastime and regularly donates blood.
Harber graduated from LMU in 1961, and his love for his alma mater has been a center of his volunteer spirit. He served as a director of the LMU National Alumni Association for three years. Since 2009, he has led the Southwest Virginia Alumni chapter as its president. He has supported student scholarships at LMU as well as at Thomas Walker High School.
Harber also extends his volunteer spirit nationwide. Twice a year he travels to Moblesville, Ind., to tell stories to students at Stoney Creek Elementary School. He traveled to Georgia after devastating tornadoes ripped through communities there. After Hurricane Katrina, Harber volunteered to help rebuild damaged areas of Mississippi and Louisiana.
