November 7, 2012 - Harrogate, Tennessee — Lincoln Memorial University-John J. Duncan, Jr., School of Law (LMU-DSOL) students LuAnn Hileman and Ivy Gardner, both set to graduate in May 2013, traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to compete in the National Veterans Law Moot Court Tournament hosted by The George Washington University Law School.

First organized in 2009, the National Veterans Law Moot Court Competition (formerly the Veterans Law Appellate Advocacy Competition) is the nation’s premier moot court competition focusing on veterans law. The competition brings together teams of students from around the country to the nation’s capital to argue cutting edge veterans law issues before panels of distinguished practitioners and judges. The 2012 competition included twenty competing teams.

The National Veterans Law Moot Court Competition recruits highly qualified judges to preside over the competition. The judges for the briefs and oral arguments are drawn from the ranks of experienced veterans law practitioners. In particular, the final round is judged by a panel of actual judges of the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims in the CAVC’s courtroom.

Hileman, of Oliver Springs, Tenn., and Gardner, of Crossville, Tenn., argued two rounds and submitted a brief. The pair was not included in the final field of eight teams that advanced to the second day of competition. Hileman and Gardner were coached by Externship Director Richard Gaines and Assistant Professor of Law Chuck MacLean with assistance from Professor of Law and Faculty Advisor for the Moot Court Board Shelly George.

The Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law is located in Knoxville’s Historic Old City Hall Building.
