September 4, 2013 - Harrogate, Tennessee—Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will host the 2013 Railsplitter 5K Night Run during its annual Homecoming celebration in October. The 5K run/walk is set for Friday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m.

“Traditionally held on Saturday morning, the Railsplitter 5K has been a very popular event at Homecoming over the years,” said LMU Director of Alumni Services Donnie Lipscomb. “The Homecoming committee thought that it would be fun to try something new this year. The Night Run will give us another event on Friday as Homecoming really gets underway.”

The run is open to runners and walkers of every speed. The course will begin and end on the University Quadrangle at the Duke Hall of Citizenship. Registration will open at 6:30 p.m. and the race time is 7:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is $30 per participant or $35 on the day of the race. The student rate is $15. Participants will receive a t-shirt and glow necklace to help light the way. Prizes will be awarded for the top three male runners, top three female runners, most illuminated male, most illuminated female and most “blinded by the light.” Headphones and strollers are permitted on the course.

Proceeds from the race will go toward the National Alumni Association’s Democrat Hollow Renovation Fund. Democrat Hollow is a beloved picnic and recreation area on the LMU Main Campus. The National Alumni Association has outlined plans to add a pavilion and restroom facilities to enhance the area.

A homecoming ice cream social and karaoke contest will follow the Railspliter 5K Night Race on the quad. Race participants are encouraged to stick around for the other activities. Contact Lipscomb at 423.869.6353 or by email at for more information. Online registration is available at
