LMU INTRODUCES POST-BACCALAUREATE MEDICAL SCIENCES PROGRAM
November 1, 2009 - Harrogate, Tennessee, October 26, 2009— The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Board of Trustees has approved the development of a Post-Baccalaureate Medical Science Program (PMSP) with the initial class forming next fall. The PMSP is a 12-month, certificate program designed to prepare students for entry into medical school.
The PMSP was developed to be a bridge for students who are interested in applying to medical school, but who need additional advanced science courses before matriculating into a medical program. The program will be personalized for each individual student to address his or her area of need. Additionally, all students successfully completing the program will be guaranteed an interview at the Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM).
“Lincoln Memorial University recognizes the importance of educating students to become quality healthcare providers for the Appalachian region and the nation,” Dean of Research and STEM Initiatives Alan Biel said. “The Post-Baccalaureate Medical Science Program is an important part of this effort. We are excited about the prospect of being able to assist students who have the desire and ability to become physicians but are not yet academically qualified to enter medical school.”
Students will work closely with advisors to develop a personalized plan of study that will enhance the students’ background as they prepare for professional school entrance exams. In addition to coursework, the program will include a Kaplan MCAT preparatory course and a specially developed course in medical science taught by faculty members of LMU-DCOM. Another benefit of this program is that students will be given the opportunity to shadow professionals in their field.
“As director of academics for the Post-Baccalaureate Medical Science Program, I look forward to working with each of our PMSP students,” said PMSP Director of Academics Aggy Vanderpool. “Together, we will build an academic program designed to help our students achieve the dream of becoming a physicians. At LMU, we are dedicated to helping students make that dream a reality.”
To be considered for admission into the PSMP, students must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The program also requires two letters of recommendation, including one from a science professor or pre-medical advisor at the student’s undergraduate institution.
Lincoln Memorial University is a values-based learning community dedicated to providing quality educational experiences in the liberal arts and professional studies. The main campus is located in Harrogate, Tennessee.
