EPPS, MOBLEY & UNIVERSITY ANESTHESIOLOGISTS ESTABLISH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AT LMU

February 5, 2010 - Harrogate, Tennessee—Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Caylor School of Nursing (CSON) and University Anesthesiologists have partnered to aid nurse anesthetist students in funding their education. Headed by Dr. Jerry Epps and Dr. Ed Mobley, University Anesthesiologists in Knoxville, Tenn., has established the University Anesthesiologists Annual Scholarship Fund at LMU.

"The Caylor School of Nursing is very appreciative of the support by University Anesthesiologists of our Nurse Anesthesia students,” Dean Mary Anne Modrcin said. “This support not only assists students but also contributes to access of additional nurse anesthetists by the communities LMU serves."

The scholarship agreement calls for University Anesthesiologists to provide a total scholarship amount for the 28-month duration of the program of $35,000.00 per recipient. Applicants must be currently enrolled in or admitted to attend LMU, and must be classified as being a graduate student in the Nurse Anesthesia concentration in the CSON. Scholarship recipients are expected to demonstrate successful academic performance and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The University Anesthesiologists Annual Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis contingent on funding. The award funds will be used for tuition, books and fees. University Anesthesiologists will determine the number of students to receive scholarships annually.

The scholarship was made possible through the close partnership between LMU Nurse Anesthesia Program Director Jeff James and University Anesthesiologists. Not only does the anesthesia group provide generous financial support for LMU students, but they also play a vital role in the program as a clinical partner.

Current LMU graduate student Beth Thomas is the first recipient of the University Anesthesiologists Annual Scholarship.

The CSON introduced the nurse anesthetist concentration to its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program in 2008. Since then, the program has been awarded a $1,051,332 grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the Advanced Education Nursing (AEN) grant program. Additionally the program was granted accreditation by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs. The MSN program received unanimous Tennessee Board of Nursing approval and is accredited by The National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC).
