LMU POOL RE-OPENING MAY 7

April 27, 2012 - Harrogate, Tennessee — The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Pool in the Mary S. Annan Natatorium on LMU’s main campus in Harrogate, Tenn., will re-open to the public on Monday, May 7.

Following a closure that has spanned several months, the roof of the pool has been replaced and the interior has been completely repainted. During the roof renovation several skylights were also installed. The new roof and skylights will allow the LMU Pool to operate more efficiently. The lights will save on energy as the electric lights can be turned off in favor of natural sun light in the summer months.

Director of Aquatic Services Floyde Anne Gardner and Children’s Aquatic Coordinator Kathy Francisco will dive right back into a full schedule of activities at the pool. The first of two lifeguarding classes will begin on opening day, May 7, and run through May 12. Pre-registration and a swim test are required for enrollment in the lifeguard classes. Call Gardner at (423) 869-6243 for more information. The second session of lifeguard classes will take place from May 21-26.

Before the summer swim programming gets underway, Francisco will offer one session of swim lessons this spring; May 7, 9, 14 and 16. The lessons are an hour in length and are held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each session runs over two weeks and includes four hours of instruction. The cost per session is $75 for group swim lessons (children or adult) or $55 for parent/child water familiarization classes designed for children under the age of three. Summer sessions will follow with two sessions in June and two sessions in July.

Additionally, Francisco is offering a school-aged competitive swim club, Aquasplitters, open to children ages eight to 18. The Aquasplitters sessions are set for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 -5:15 p.m. for the remainder of the spring. The Aquasplitters summer session is set for Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7-8 p.m. The sessions provide instruction and organized workouts for strong youth swimmers interested in learning competitive swimming skills. The cost is $4 per class. LMU also plans to add a youth synchronized swimming program soon.

There are 16 hours of lap swim built into the new schedule. Lap swim is available Monday thru Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. and from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday. It is also available on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8 to 9 p.m. Weekend lap swim hours are Friday from 6-7 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. Lap swim fees are $2 per visit.

For individuals looking for a low impact, high-energy workout the LMU Pool has several classes to choose from. Shallow water aerobics are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Cheryl Shoults, a new instructor at the LMU Pool, presents two new classes this spring. The “Young and Young at Heart” shallow water aerobics are set from Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. and the “Young and Young at Heart” deep water aerobics are available on Thursdays at same time. All classes are $4 per class or $60 for 18 classes.

Senior swim, a time reserved for swimmers 50-years old and older, is held Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to noon and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. The senior swim fee is $1 per visit. Gardner, a breast cancer survivor herself, leads a breast cancer survivor’s workout on Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The spring LMU Pool open swim hours include: Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m.; Friday from 1-6 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Sunday from 1- 4 p.m. The schedule will change when the pool transitions to summer schedule.
