LMU TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL REMOTE AREA MEDICAL HEALTH EXPEDITION
April 4, 2008 - Harrogate, Tennessee—Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will open the doors to its Third Annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) Health Expedition at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. The community outreach project provides free medical, dental, optical and veterinary services to the underserved, underinsured and unemployed and will run through Sunday, June 1.
RAM provides a wide range of free basic health, dental and optical services to the people of Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Northeast Tennessee. The Knoxville-based organization also provides services outside the United States. Since its founding in 1985, RAM has provided services at over 500 health expeditions both in this country and overseas. On average, the group conducts one exhibition per month in various communities throughout the Southeast. The organization was recently featured on the CBS News program 60 Minutes, which highlighted the work RAM is doing within the United States.
Among the services to be rendered at LMU will be medical services including specialist exams, osteopathic manipulations, diabetes screenings and education, cholesterol screenings, pulmonary function testing, pap smears, breast exams, mammograms (a limited number available on Saturday only) and medication assistance. In the dental area cleanings, fillings and extractions will be performed and complete eye exams will be available in the optical area. Additionally, eye glasses will be made on site, though RAM cannot guarantee that glasses will be made for every patient. The veterinary clinic will provide free spays and neutering for cats and dogs, but only to households with an income level of $15,000 or less annually. The veterinary services are the only services which require proof of income.
The clinic will open at 6:30 a.m. each day. All services are rendered on a first-come, first-served basis. Patients are encouraged to arrive early, be prepared to wait and to bring snacks and drinks to last throughout the day. The patient entrance for medical, dental and optical services will be located at the lower level of Tex Turner Arena, which is behind the building. The lower level parking lot will be reserved for event staff and handicapped parking only. Shuttle buses will run from the upper parking lot to the patient entrance throughout the weekend.
The veterinary services will be administered at the Phillips Veterinary Technology Center. These services will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Animals should not have had anything to eat for 12 hours prior to surgery (water is fine), should be in good overall health and be at least four months old.
The University and RAM are currently recruiting volunteer dentists, optometrists and opticians. If you are interested in volunteering please visit www.ramusa.org. For more information about services available at the LMU expedition call (423) 869-7162.
