LMU SIFE WINS REGIONAL COMPETITION TO ADVANCE TO NATIONALS
April 1, 2009 - Harrogate, Tennessee — The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) won the Regional Competition held in Cincinnati last week and now advances to the SIFE USA National competition. Twenty-two teams competed at the regional competition and LMU was named the Regional Champion for its league to advance. The national competition will take place May 10-12 in Philadelphia.
The LMU SIFE team advanced after competing against Cedarville University, Western Kentucky University, Indiana University East and Lindsey Wilson College. The LMU SIFE team has 40 members including the presenting team of Seth Oakes, Kyle Gaerke, Brandon Whaley, Brandon Brooks, Jenna Vannoy, Sarah Harrison, Amanda Horenkamp, Lia Bevins, Traci Brooks, Ashley Shelley, Rachel Anderson and Carla Dunn. Assistant Professor of Business Dave Hinkes and Interim Business School Dean and Assistant Professor Jack McCann serve as faculty co-advisors. SIFE has been active at LMU for six years. This is the third trip to Nationals for the LMU team.
“The enthusiasm that our students have for the SIFE program is tremendous,” said LMU Vice President for Academic Affairs Sherilyn Emberton. “It is very gratifying to see your students engaged in their studies to a point where they are seeking opportunities to share their knowledge with the community. Our students have touched the lives of people of all ages and even their peers through their SIFE projects and this institution could not be prouder of their efforts.”
During this academic year, the LMU SIFE team organized several projects, including seminars for college freshmen on choosing the right credit card and understanding credit scores, as well as a workshop called International Etiquette 101 that featured several international speakers discussing business etiquette in their home countries.
SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focus on market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics.
