LMU'S HIGH ADVENTURE SERIES GEARS UP FOR OVERNIGHT HIKES
November 10, 2010 - Harrogate, Tennessee—Students at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will soon be taking hiking to the next level thanks to a grant awarded to LMU’s High Adventure Series for the purchase of overnight hiking equipment.
The Enterprise Holdings Foundation awarded $1,500 to the High Adventure Series to purchase six sleeping bags, three two-man tents and six backpacks for overnight hiking trips.
“I’m excited to be able to add another activity to the list of trips we do,” said LMU’s High Adventure Series Coordinator Rick Stowe.
Stowe said he hoped to have the equipment in by May 2011. He already has overnight hiking trips to Big Ridge State Park in Maynardville, Tenn., and to local trails within the Cumberland Gap National Park in mind. Stowe said the equipment will allow students who don’t already own such equipment, and who have maybe never taken long hikes, to experience overnight nature outings.
The High Adventure Series already offers a whole slate of activities to students, including rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing and snowboarding. On campus, the program offers the High Adventure Ropes Course, which features a 500-foot zipline. Last Saturday, 13 teams of medical students from as far as Texas -- including students from the LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine-- competed in MedWAR on the ropes course. MedWAR is a national organization that combines wilderness medicine with adventure racing and events take place all over the country.
The University has opened the course up to outside groups. The activities included in the course consist of warm-up and get-to-know-you games and team building games. A program can be customized to fill as little as a half-day of activity to as much as three days. LMU plans to develop packages that could include overnight accommodations for summer camps, businesses and other groups.
