LMU STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE OVER 10,000 HOURS TO COMMUNITY
March 4, 2011 - Harrogate, Tennessee — The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Office of Student Services recently released its Student Service Initiative (SSI) report for Fall 2010 with record numbers. Nearly 700 students receiving financial aid devoted a best ever 10,197 hours of community service last semester.
“While participation increases every year, this fall semester’s student involvement in the LMU service region was particularly impacting,” said SSI Coordinator and Director of Student Success, Retention and Career Services Larry Thacker. “Students not only experienced the importance and satisfaction of giving their valuable time to others, but gained essential skills they can apply to their fields of study and continued career path. Traditional classroom learning sets a foundation, but out-of-classroom learning only enhances their real-world experiences.”
Each semester LMU awards thousands of dollars of institutional financial aid to its students. In an effort to get students to broaden their horizons and become involved in service-learning projects in the community, recipients of institutional aid are required to participate in LMU’s SSI.
The over 10,000 hours of service directly impacted the community in a positive manner and helped students connect with the University’s mission to serve the needs of rural Appalachia. Besides the satisfaction of giving back to the community, students increased their opportunity to meet people and engage in activities outside their day-to-day world, strengthened their marketability and enhanced their future job opportunities through networking and resume building.
Students participated in a variety of opportunities from the Knoxville area into southeast Kentucky and surrounding counties. Some of those projects included Relay for Life, ROHO, the LMU Halloween Festival and local church involvement.
“We’re very proud of how our students are representing the university’s mission out in the community,” said Thacker.
